Inability of the Moldavian authorities to
resolve internal political and social problems led to the fact that
representatives of the European community joined establishment of order in the
Republic of Moldova. Either recipes of the PACE are not fulfilled completely or
problems in Moldova are too numerous, but the situation with Moldavian
authorities – after reports in the PACE on situation in the RM – quite
resembles the picture “A bad mark again!” of the painter Repin.
The press agency
“Olvia-press”, linking the press agency “Infotag”, informs that during the
plenary sitting of the Council of Europe reporter for Moldova Lauri Vahtre drew
particular attention at the system of local government, which in her opinion
contradicts to European norms, and the judicial power has insufficient
authority. Vahtre also emphasized, “Despite the adopted law on public
television, fear dominates in the Moldavian television”.
Another CE
reporter for Moldova Josette Durieu reflected situation with the RM mass media
also. In her opinion, the main problem consists in depending status of mass
media. “It is necessary to guarantee their freedom, because only mass media may
provide control over the power in Moldova”, Josette Durieu thinks.
But instead of
developing democratic institutes in the country, the President of Moldova
Vladimir Voronin used to take ill-considered decisions, which seriously
destabilize the situation in society. Registration of the Bessarabian
Metropolitan See may serve a typical example.
The Parliamentary
Assembly of the Council of Europe supported the requirement about legalization
of that religious organization, put forward by representatives of the Christian-Democrat
People’s Party during disturbances in Kishinev in spring 2002. The Bessarabian
Metropolitan See was registered in the RM, in spite of enough strong resistance
of the Russian Orthodox Church, ambiguous moods of the Moldavian public
regarding that matter, and unfavorable forecasts, because activity of this
religious organization in Moldova is closely connected with politics.
This event served
a pretext for the new scandalous situation, which is now actively discussed in
the Moldavian press. The newspaper “Kishiniovskie Novosti” (The Kishinev
Newspaper) informs, “representatives of the Bessarabian Metropolitan See have
recently handed a list of pretensions (to the CE reporters for Moldova Josette
Durieu and Lauri Vahtre), where they accuse Moldova for violating rights of the
See’s parish”. The issue of property is the key one in these pretensions. The
words ‘Bessarabian Metropolitan See’ seem to become soon the synonym of
scandals and quarreling on religious grounds.
